He returned to the Trans-Mississippi, and was made adjutant of Harrell's battalion and adjutant-general of Crawford's brigade. He was judge of the Seventh circuit for two terms after the war. The regiment was ordered to the lower Mississippi. The Eleventh and the Seventeenth were mounted under command of Col. John Griffith of the Seventeenth, and dispatched to Clinton, Miss., to head off the raid of the Federal General Grierson, but failed to meet him. Then, under the command of Colonel Griffith, they operated outside the fortifications of Port Hudson during the siege of that place in March, 1863.
