Petition from Maine. --A memorial has been forwarded from Portland, Me., to Senator Fessenden, for presentation to Congress, earnestly praying for measures of conciliation and compromise. The memorial, which indicates no preference for any particular measure of compromise, is subscribed to by 2,500 signatures, collected in a very few days, and representing all shades of party feeling. The names of eight influential clergymen, and of the Rev. David W. Bacon, the Roman Catholic Bishop of l has been forwarded from Portland, Me., to Senator Fessenden, for presentation to Congress, earnestly praying for measures of conciliation and compromise. Diphtheria in Maine. --The ravages of diphtheria have been dreadful in Somerset county, Maine. In one small neighborhood, at Chesterville, ten persons have fallen victims within a brief period. In one family the father died while his child was being conveyed to the grave. In another, three children lay dead in the house at one time, and four more prostrate with the disease. Scores of families are mourning the loss of one or more loved ones. Five were lying dead at one time in three families. One entire family had been carried away and all the children, seven in number, in another. The skill of the best physicians a totally baffled.
