The Daily Dispatch: October 17, 1861., [Electronic resource], Federal vessels Chased out of Pamlico sound. (search)
Federal vessels Chased out of Pamlico sound. --The Norfolk Day Book, of yesterday, contains the following: The steamer Roanoke, Captain Hobbs, arrived here last evening about 8 o'clock from Roanoke Island. The Roanoke left the island at 6 o'clock Monday afternoon, and her Captain reports that the Confederate steamers Curiew, Fanny, Raleigh, Winslow, and Edwards, left Sunday afternoon under the command of Com. Lynch for Hatteras. Very heavy firing was heard on the Monday following in the direction of Hatteras, which began at daylight and continued until 8 o'clock; but no reports from the expedition had reached the island when the Roanoke left. The Captain further states that it was reported that two Federal war steamers were cruising in Pamlico Sound previous to the departure of the expedition, but that they were chased out by our steamers.
