Aiding slaves to escape.
--William H. Thomas, a white man, apparently 21 years of age, and hailing from Montgomery county, was before the Mayor yesterday, to answer the charge of giving passes to slaves, to enable them to escape the custody of their masters.
Constable Robinson, of Henrico, testified that on learning that the , he procured assistance, and going to the house designated, captured the prisoner while in the very act of giving a pass to a slave.
On taking him into custody, Thomas confessed his guilt, and professed great penitence for his crime.
As he had been released from the county jail only a few days, where he had been tried and acquitted of forgery, the officer had very little confidence in his pretended penitence, and therefore locked him up. He soon after learned that Thomas had employed agents to bring slaves in want of passes to him, he dividing the fees received with those agents, reserving of course the lion's share for him self.
