Ward, Marcus Laurence -1884 Born in Newark, N. J., Nov. 9, 1812; was a delegate to the National Republican conventions in Chicago in 1860 and in Baltimore in 1864; governor of New Jersey in 1865-68; chairman of the national Republican committee in 1866; member of Congress in 1873-75. He was a member of the New Jersey Historical Society, improved the condition of the State-prison, and was an active philanthropist. He died in Newark, N. J., April 25, 1884.
