Lieutenant-Colonel Owens was elected Colonel of the Fifty-third. At the same time, May 6th, Captain E. A. Ross, of Company A, was promoted to the majority. The regiment, therefore, went into service early in May among the troops for the defence of Wilmington with the following organization: Colonel Collett Leventhorpe, Lieutenant-Colonel W. J.
