Harper's monthly magazine, the first of the greater i852, prints a long Letter to the publishers of Harper's magazine signed An American Writer, which exins, and Stephen Crane. The first editor of Harper's monthly was Henry J. Raymond. Henry M. Aldend John Kendrick Bangs. The early numbers of Harper's monthly each contained a few woodcuts, many and later the triangular rivalry engaged in by Harper's, the Century, and Scribner's magazine, has lingame, first appeared in January, 1887. Like Harper's magazine it is closely associated with a great publishing house, but unlike Harper's in the early years it was never a mere tender to the busineasional full-page inserted plates.
