position of hands. He was a young man of some energy, and had been imprisoned in England for preaching contrary to law. His accession proved a great attraction to the people of his scattered parish, who flocked to the communion in such numbers that the neighborhood could not supply elements enough. At his installation there were no ministers present. Colby's Notes. September 27, 1687, it was voted to fetch up Rev. Thomas Bailey [brother of the pastor], at the charge of the town, and, November 7th, it was voted that Rev. Thomas Bailey's £ 60 shall begin the same day he came to dwell among us, 2 Nov. 1687, with houseroom and firing. The labors of the Baileys were comparatively of short duration. Thomas died January 21, 1688-9, aged 35 years; the wife of his brother in April, 1690. They were both buried in the Old Burying Ground, where two horizontal slabs bear quaint epitaphs to their memory. The health of John was feeble, and these bereavements so wore upon him that he was u
