Correction. --In hurriedly writing down Mr. Hancock's statement of the skirmish at Vienna, we said that "Col. Gregg, with a detachment of cavalry, won't 45 miles down to the Potomac river." We should have said that he went with a detachment of 45 cavalry a few miles down to the Potomac. In another place the compositor made us say that a Northern soldier had his hand shot off; while the fact was that the unfortunate Hessian lost his head from the effect of the fire.

y judge from the expert style in which he manages everything connected with his department. He is a man of firmness and decision without being morose or overbearing, as is the case with officers generally of his rank, and has the entire confidence of his men. If an opportunity is afforded him, he will teach the minions of A. L. a lesson that will be remembered for generations. The town is comparatively quiet this morning, though life with rumors which, if generally credited, would cause serious derangement in the conduct of civil affairs. None are worth repeating here. Several new companies are forming at this place, and likely to be organized in a short time. Among them I notice that the Ruggles Guard, Capt. E. M. Brixton, seems to be a favorite. There is one forming for the Wise Legion, under Capt. Harrow, of Spotsylvania county. The news of the fight at Vienna reached here by the cars yesterday evening and produced a degree of enthusiasm almost inconceivable. M.
