great body of the people are determined on resistance. They only want arms, of which there is a great scarcity. The U. S. Commissioner in St. Louis had issued a warrant for the arrest of Gov. Jackson on the charge of treason, and this warrant was taken up to Booneville when Lyon went up to attack the State troops there. Unfortunately, the Governor's forces were very partially armed, and they had just begun to throw up their breastworks when Lyon's boats were announced. The Governor and Gen. Price, after consultation, decided that it was best to retreat, and the main body did so, proceeding towards Lexington. About 200 Missourians, however, determined to take a shot at the Federal troops, and for that purpose remained behind, sheltered by a wood on the side of a wheat field. Lyon's forces landed below Booneville, and as they marched through the field, the 300 took two deliberate shots at them, killing as our in formant is satisfied, one hundred and fifty.--The Federal troops then
