title us to be called beneficent. We must uphold the Southern cause not only in word but in deed. If we cannot go to the "tented field," we can at least open our hearts and our houses to the brave men who represent us thereon. We can let them know that they shall not pine away uncared for, nor die unmourned, so long as Virginia has a living patriot within her borders. A note left on our table has evoked these remarks. Its purport is that heads of families who are prepared to accommodate sick soldiers will do well to send their address, with the number they can receive, to Surgeon C. B. Gibson, who has charge of the General Hospital. That they will do so, we doubt not. The universal regard for the welfare of the soldiers which our people have manifested hitherto, the numerous private and public hospitals with which our city abounds, and the many private houses which are now filled with sick soldiers, all attest as well the patriotism of our men as the noble natures of our women.
