We have on more than one occasion endeavored to do justice to the people of Northwestern Virginia, who, though overrun by an armed hords of invaders, are, we feel fully assured, true as steel to their native Common. wealth and to the South. There are among them time-serving politicians, and sordid, penurious spirits, who, for the sake of power and pelf, would submit to the usurpations of the Federal Government and of the bogus concern which has Pierpont at lis head. But this is not the feeling of the great body of the people. Grose injustice has been done them in representing them as willing vassals of the Lincoln despotism, because they have no; risen in rebellion. Who doubts the loyalty of Haryland to the South, and why has not Maryland risen? Who suspects the Eastern Shore even of lukewarmness in the Southern cause, and why is the Eastern Shore profoundly quiet ! The same reason which prevents a popular demonstration in those sections prevents it i
