Baseness of our enemies. A matter has recently occurred which exhibits in its most repulsive aspect the rascality and baseness of our enemies. Among the paroled prisoners, who had been confined in Fort Delaware, were a number who, when they reached Southern soil, were so debilitated from harsh treatment, improper food, and other causes, that it was found necessary to send them to hospitals. One of these, a member of the 8th Alabama regiment, was taken to the South Carolina hospital at Pthat it was found necessary to send them to hospitals. One of these, a member of the 8th Alabama regiment, was taken to the South Carolina hospital at Petersburg, and the next day varioloid developed itself. He stated to the Surgeon in charge, that while confined in Fort Delaware the prisoners were exposed to small-pox by the Yankees, with the hope, it is presumed, that they would bring it hither. The case, however, happened to be of a very light form, and no danger is apprehended from it.
