matter how disagreeable the dose may be. The New York Republican Press on the arrest of Vallandigham. Even the organs of Lincoln's own party condemn the course of the Government officials inuthorities are to be held as above criticism; or even denunciation. It concludes by asking if Vallandigham may not question the justice or propriety of Burnside's orders, may the Evening Post, or a thmmission cannot inquire into motives. Deeds are terrible, but not thoughts. Speaking of Vallandigham, Greeley says his politics are as bad as bad can be, and if there were penalties for holding ould be one of the most flagrant offenders. He says "he agreed fully with Gen. Burnside that Vallandigham ought not to make such speeches as he does; that he ought to be ashamed of himself; but then st joke Mr. Lincoln has yet made. These articles are evidently not from any sympathy with Vallandigham, but from apprehension of the effect his treatment will produce in Ohio and elsewhere. H
The New York leaders. The Herald makes a well-directed shot at the prominent leaders among the sympathizers with Vallandigham. That paper says: "None of the recognized leaders of the Democracy took an active part in these proceedings. They all had their convenient excuses for keeping in the back-ground. They lacked the moral courage to face the music. They put forward the lesser lights and the more reckless orators of the party." This is very true. The leaders did remain on the shady side of the tree.--However, some of them wrote letters; but they took care to couple with their reprobation of the proceedings in the Vallandigham case allusions to their zeal against the Southern rebellion. They had an eye to the noose and kept a hand raised to avoid it. They do not mean to go far enough to get that about their necks if they can help it. If Lincoln is firm, we shall see what stuff they are made of.
