ath of a citizen of Richmond. In the New York Herald, of the 9th inst., in a letter dated July 5th, from "near James river," purporting to give an account of the fighting on the afternoon of June 30th, we find the following paragraph: Gen. Smith was dressing in the house of Mr. Britton, opposite White Oak Swamp, when the rebels opened their fire. A shell burst in the house, killing Mr. B, and setting the premises on fire. --General Smith escaped with only the apparel he had on, losingGeneral Smith escaped with only the apparel he had on, losing his watch, sword, and all his personal effects. The person alluded to is Mr. Jas. H. Britton, who formerly for many years had a stall in the 1st Market and afterwards opened a dry goods store on Franklin street. He subsequently purchased a farm in the vicinity of White Oak Swamp, where he was residing at the time of his death. It was reported here that he was burned alive in his own house, by the Yankees, but we presure the above statement is correct as to the manner of his death.
