Wheeler was ordered to take what troops of his command that could be spared from the front, and, if possible, capture it. His force, 1600 strong, under the immediate command of Brig. Gen. Kelly, reached Cleveland yesterday morning. Here he found the train had not pursued that route, and he pushed towards Charleston, when he encountered a brigade of the enemy, and drove them to their reserves.
