oursed so much faction and folly, let it utter with its dying breath — Beauregard! During the past sombre year, the only star of success that has shone with steady radiance upon our storm-tost sea, is that which gleams from the battlements of Charleston. The right man has been in the right place, and he has been supported by a harmonious and self-sacrificing people. All honor to Charleston and its faithful and heroic defenders! Immortal honor to its great and virtuous chief, whose transcendent talents and energy are only equalled by the rare disinterestedness of his nature and the beautiful modesty of his character. Whilst such a constellation of military genius still guides the armies of the South as Lee, Johnston, Beauregard, Longstreet, Magruder, to say nothing of other stars not yet so high in position, but whose brilliancy gives promise of an equally grand career, doubt and despondency should be dismissed, and Gratitude, Faith, and Hope animate every Confederate heart.
