The news.
Sherman's movements in South Carolina.
Dispatches, dated Charleston, February 2, received from Charleston yesterday, state that Sherman is advancing on Branchville, and that skirmishing was going on at Braxton's bridge, on the Salkehatchie.
Another dispatch says they were at Wheppy swamp, thirty miles south of Branchville.
The War Department, yesterday, received no dispatch of importance from South Carolina.
According to advices received there, it was thought a portion of Sherman's force might attempt to cross the Salkehatchie seven miles above "N — Roadbridge." The Twentieth corps was still at Robertsville.
The Fourteenth corps was crossing at Robertsville.
The sum of everything that is known on the subject amounts to only what we have believed for several days — that Sherman is moving on Branchville in force.
General Beauregard has arrived in Augusta and taken charge of military operations there.
