arged with shooting at, with intent to kill, another white man, named A. E. Jones; but, owing to the absence of witnesses, the case was continued till Monday, and the accused, in the meantime, held to bail in the sum of five hundred dollars. Jim, slave of W. B. Green, charged with stealing bacon, the property of William D. Gibson, was discharged, owing to the insufficiency of the evidence elicited on the occasion. The continued case of Martha Green, free negro, charged with stealing two bales of cotton yarn from some person unknown, and also with stealing one pair of shoes, four pounds of meal, and two and a half pounds of bacon, the property of Stephen Wright, a free negro, was disposed of by ordering the accused to receive twenty-five stripes, well laid on. Betty slave of Louisa Corbett, charged with using insulting and abusive language towards Sarah J. Wilks, a white person, was ordered to be whipped. The Mayor then vacated his seat till 9 o'clock this morning.
