For three weeks Lee waited, hoping to be attacked, and then suddenly, on October 9th, put his own army in motion with a design of making a wide circuit around his antagonist's right, to manoeuvre him out of Culpeper to his rear, and force him to deliver battle by intercepting his march toward Washington.
He left a small force of infantry and cavalry to hold his old line on the Rapidan, which the Union cavalry attacke side, with here and there a few narrow roads.
