Clarke, Elijah 1774-1799
Military officer; born in North Carolina; went to Georgia in 1774, where he became a captain in 1776, and fought both British and Indians on the frontiers.
He was an active leader in the war for independence, and was largely instrumental in the capture of Augusta, Ga., in 1781.
He fought many battles and made several treaties with the Indians; but in 1794 he was accused of a design to establish an independent government among the Creeks, where he had settled in violation of law. He died in Wilkes county, Ga., Dec. 15, 1799.

Eggleston, Joseph, 1754-1811
Military officer; born in Amelia county, Va., Nov. 24, 1754; was graduated at William and Mary College in 1776; joined the cavalry of the American army; became captain, and acquired the reputation of being an officer of great efficiency.
In 1781 he displayed remarkable bravery in the action of Guilford Court-house and in the siege of Augusta; later in the same year he won the first success in the battle of Eutaw by a well-directed blow against the vanguard of the British column.
He held a seat in Congress in 1798-1801.
He died in Amelia county, Va., Feb. 13, 1811.

Evans, Clement Anselm, 1859-
Lawyer; born in Georgia; graduated at the law school of Augusta, Ga.; was in the Georgia Senate in 1859; served in the Confederate army through the Civil War, and was an acting major-general in the Army of Northern Virginia at the time of Lee's surrender.
He is the author of Military history of Georgia; and editor of Confederate military history (12 volumes).

Hammond, Samuel 1757-1842
Military officer; born in Richmond county, Va., Sept. 21, 1757; participated in Dunmore's expedition; served throughout the Revolutionary War; settled in Savannah; was elected to Congress in 1803; appointed commandant of upper Louisiana in 1805, and held the office until 1824, when he resigned.
He died in Augusta, Ga., Sept. 11, 1842.
