τοὺς ὑπώπτευε μάλιστα. For the employment of dangerous citizens on foreign service cf. Miltiades in the Chersonese (vi. 35. 3, though H. there gives a religious motive) and vii. 222 n. So Napoleon used Spaniards in the north of Europe (Oman, Penin. War, i. 367 seq.), who would have been dangerous at home. τριήρεσι. The mention of ‘triremes’ seems inconsistent with 39. 3, and is tacitly corrected by Thuc. i. 14 “φαίνεται . . . ταῦτα” (i. e. early naval powers, including that of Polycrates) . . . τριήρεσι μὲν ὀλίγαις χρώμενα, πεντηκοντόροις δ᾽ ἔτι καὶ πλοίοις μακροῖς ἐξηρτυμένα. In the story (41. 2, 124. 2) a penteconter (not a trireme) is used.
