[237] The exact sense of ἀμφουδίς is unknown; but it evidently implies lifting by the middle. Ameis quotes Ter. Adelph. iii. 2. 18Sublimem medium arriperem et capite in terram statuerem, ut cerebro dispergat viam.” Probably it is an adverb in “-δις”, and has nothing to do with “οὐδός” or “οὖδας”.
