[710] λαοὶ . . ἕταροι in apposition, another curious and unique phrase; either of the variants “ἄλλοι” and “αἰέν” would be preferable. Heyne conj. “ἕταροί θ᾽”. Nor is there any analogy for the appearance of the shield-bearer in H.; the hero always carries that weapon for himself.
