Destructive fire in Galveston.

--The Galveston News, extra, of the 26th ult., has the following account of a destructive fire in that city:

‘ A fire broke out this morning in the small trunk store next to the store of Messrs. Briggs & Yard. The store of Messrs. B. & Y. was broken open, and many of the goods were taken out and saved, though, we presume, in a damaged condition. This building was entirely consumed; and, from the intense heat, the window frames of Mr. Sauters' four-story brick store, on the opposite side of the alley, caught on fire, but Mr. Sauters was able to prevent the fire from extending beyond the windows.

On the north side the fire was not so easily arrested, as there was a continuous range of small wooden buildings in that direction, to the corner of Tremont and Mechanic streets, and then along Mechanic street to A. Baldinger's brick store on the other side of the block. By-steady and well directed streams of water from the engines in thr rear, the fire was finally extinguished when it had reached about the middle of this block on Mechanic street.

No doubt is entertained but that this fire was the work of incendiaries. Another attempt was also made to fire the city last night at the post office.

Since writing the above, we have obtained the following list of buildings destroyed or damaged: Sauter's four-story building has all the windows destroyed on the north side; Briggs & Yard's clothing store entirely destroyed; B. & Y.'s trunk store destroyed; Wagner's jewelry store destroyed; Daniel's gun shop destroyed; a fruit store destroyed; auction store destroyed on corner of Tremont and Mechanic street; a mattress maker's shop; a drinking saloon, called the Solferino; Mestier's gun shop destroyed; saddlery shop much damaged; Broad Gauge drinking saloon much damaged; Arnaud's restaurant damaged.

Mr. Balliuger owned the next buildings, two of which were half pulled down, with a view to prevent the extension of the fire. Nos. 2 and 3, above, belonged to Briggs & Yard; 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 belonged to Capt. Chas. Black; 10, 11, 12 and 13 belonged to Mr. E. H. Seiling.
