πεζός 1 πούς

1.on foot, πεζοί fighters on foot, opp. to horsemen, Hom.:—also on land, going by land, opp. to sea-faring, id=Hom.:—so, πεζὸς στρατός, or πεζός alone, sometimes foot-soldiery, infantry, opp. to cavalry ( ἵππος), Hdt., Xen.
2. πεζός, also, a land-force or army, opp. to a naval force, Hdt., Thuc.; so, τὸ πεζόν Hdt.; στρατιὰ καὶ ναυτικὴ καὶ πεζή Thuc.; τὰ πεζὰ κράτιστοι strongest by land, id=Thuc.
3.of animals, land, as opp. to birds and fishes, τὰ π. καὶ τὰ πτηνά beasts and birds, Plat.
II.metaph. of language, not rising above the ground, prosaic, Luc.
III.dat. fem. πεζῇ (sub. ὁδῷ) as adv., on foot, Xen.
2.by land, Thuc.
