Κεφ. ιβ᾽. Θεραπεία Ἀρθρίτιδος καὶ Ἰσχιάδος.

σιτίων καὶ Ρ῾αφανίδων πολλάκις.1 ἔπειτα ἐς τὸν ἐλλέβορον ἄγειν. δίαιτα δὲ ἐπὶ τοῖσδε ξυνὴ τοῖσι ἄλλοισι πάθεσι: καὶ ἐπὶ τῇ διαίτῃ ἄλειψις, ψυχρολουσίη θαλασσίη: μάλιστα μὲν ὦν ἅπασι ἀρθριτι κοῖσι ξυνὰ ἄκεα: καὶ γὰρ καὶ τοῖσι ποδαγρικοῖσι ἐλλέβορος τὸ μέγα ἄκος, ἀλλὰ ἐν τῇσι πρώτῃσι προσβολῇσι τοῦ πάθεος. ἢν δὲ ἐκ πολλῶν μὲν [p. 236] ἤδη χρόνων ἔῃ, ἀτὰρ καὶ ἐκ διαδέξιος πατέρων φανῇ, ξυναποθνήσκει νοῦσος. ἐς δὲ τοὺς παροξυσμοὺς τῶν ἄρθρων τάδε χρὴ πρήσσειν. εἰρία μὲν ἔστω ἐξ ὄϊος τὰ οἰσυπώδεα: τέγξιες δὲ διὰ Ρ῾οδίνου καὶ οἴνου: μετεξετέροισι δὲ καὶ σπογγίη ξὺν ὀξυκρήτῳ ὤνησεν. ἔπειτα ἐπίπλασμα, ἄρτος ξὺν τοῖσι ψύχουσι κολοκύν της , καὶ πέπονος: καὶ σικύη λιτὴ, καὶ ἀρνόγλωσσον βοτάνη, καὶ Ρ῾όδων τὰ φύλλα. ἀτὰρ καὶ σιδηρῖτις ἄπονος ξὺν ἄρτῳ, καὶ βρύον, καὶ συμφύτου Ρ῾ίζα, καὶ πεντάφυλλος βοτάνη, καὶ πράσιος τοῖσι φύλλοισι λεπτή. τῆσδε μέντοι τὸ μὲν ἀφέψημα ἐξάντλημα ἄπονον: αὐτὴ δὲ, ἐπίπλασμα, ξὺν ψιξὶ, κριθῶν ἀλήτῳ: μήλων τε τῶν κιτρίων τὸ ἄβρωτον ξὺν ἀλφίτοισι ἄριστον : σῦκα ξηρὰ, καὶ θάσια ξύν τινι τῶν ἀλήτων. ἥδε μέντοι ψύξιος ὕλη: καὶ τόδε μέντοι ἄλλοτε ἄλλον ὤνησε καὶ τωὐτὸν ἄλλοτε ἄλλῳ.2 μετεξετέροισι δὲ τὰ ἀλεαίνοντα ξυμφέρει, καὶ τωὐτὸν ἄλλοτε ἄλλῳ ὠφελέει. λόγος δὲ καὶ τόδε κάρτα ἄπονον ἔμμεναι : αἶγα χρὴ βοτάνης τῆς ἴριδος ἐμφαγεῖν: ἐπὴν δὲ πλησθῇ, διαλείποντα ὁκόσον νομὴ ἐν τῇ γαστρὶ μαχθείη, καταθῦσαι τὴν αἶγα, ἠδὲ ἐντὸς τῆς γαστρὸς ἐς τὴν κόπρον ἐγκρύψαι τὼ πόδε. φάρμακα δὲ μυρία. καὶ γὰρ τοὺς νοσέοντας ἑωυτῶν φαρμακέας εὐπόρους τίθησι ξυμφορή : τῶν δὲ ἰητρῶν τὰ φάρμακα ἐν τῇσι γραφῇσι λελέξεται.

2 there is evidently something wanting in the text. Petit and Ermerins substitute ὠφελέει after ἄλλῳ. I cannot but think, however, that the more natural reading would be μὴ; meaning, that the remedies in certain cases proved beneficial, and in others not.
