Here, as in v. 623, Jupiter speaks as one to whom the future is present. ‘Spes pascis:’ the more common image is that of hope as the feeder or the food (Aesch. Ag. 1668, Eur. Phoen. 396 &c.): in Soph. Ant. 897, however, we have κάρτ᾽ ἐν ἐλπίσιν τρέφω followed by an object-clause.
