fair adj.: outside the physical senses of ‘beautiful, clear, bright, unsullied,’ and the immediate fig. uses, is employed very widely as an epithet of praise (cf. the adv. FAIR); uses no longer current are:—as a form of courteous address LLL. V. ii. 311 “Fair sir, God save you!;—Fair day-light” =broad daylight Lr. IV. vii. 52.
