Persecute, to afflict, to harass; not very intelligibly used: “he hath abandoned his physicians, under whose practices he hath --d time with hope, and finds no other advantage in the process but only the losing of hope by time,” All's I, 1, 16; i. e. perhaps: he has, by the advice of his physicians, maltreated the present time (cf. Time) for the sake of hope, inflicted upon himself much pain as a cure for his disorder.
