ADVERBS Besides; briefly; by; chance; even; ever

Briefly = "a short time ago," instead of (as with us) "in a short space of time."

Briefly we heard their drums.
How couldst thou . . . bring thy news so late?

Similarly we use the Saxon equivalent "shortly" to signify futurity.
