PRONOUNS, RELATIVE AND INTERROGATIVE. What for "of what a nature?"

What is sometimes used before a noun without the appended indefinite article in exclamations. (See Article, 86.) It is also used without a noun in this sense:

“O father Abram, what these Christians are!

“What mortality is!

i.e. "what a thing mortality is!"
