CONTRACTIONS R softens or destroys a preceding vowel

R often softens a preceding unaccented vowel.

This explains the apparent Alexandrine “He thínks | me nów | incáp | ablé; | conféd(e)rates.” Temp. i. 2. 111, iv. 1. 140.
