Superimposed Column

A column that has been constructed on top of another.

Description: Superimposed columns were frequently employed to give additional support to a roof. The second tier of columns, the superimposed columns, were generally smaller than the lower columns. Construction of superimposed columns was generally reserved for interior colonnades that had to support the higher portions of a roof.
