RUČAR
Muntenia, Romania.
Small Roman
castellum at the entry into the Bran Pass, built during
the Dacian wars on one of the principal routes across
the Carpathian mountains into Dacia. The castellum,
built of earth, was rectangular (60 x 80 m). The wall of
the castellum, 7.7 m wide at the base, was surrounded
by a double ditch.
Archaeological research has established only one level,
destroyed by fire, with pottery from the beginning of the
2d c. A.D. The castellum was contemporary with and
belonged to the same complex as the castella of Drajna
and Mălăsieşti in the Subcarpathian area of Muntenia. Its
chronological connection with the limes transalutanus has
not yet been clarified. The Cohors II Flavia Bessorum
was garrisoned here.
