SAVA DI BARONISSI Campania, Italy.

About 10 km NE of Salerno, the so-called Catacombe has recently been excavated. It is the lower floor of a Roman villa constructed in the Republican period, but enlarged in the 1st c. A.D., with a sequence of rooms opening from a quadrangular cryptoporticus (33 x 30.7 m). It opens to the W, through carefully spaced arches, onto a garden. The garden is the focus of terraces that encircle the exterior of the upper story.

The ground floor rooms were used from Early Christian times, as a monumental cemetery.
