(Buccino) Italy.
In the valley of the
Platano river an ancient city 72 km inland from Salerno.
Recent excavations have brought to light ancient remains
beginning in the Early Neolithic period. The most significant are a necropolis of chamber tombs of the eneolithic period and a habitation site of the Early Bronze Age. In the modern town the podium of a Roman temple (the so-called Temple of Vulcan) is visible below houses near the piazza. Near San Mauro, 1.6 km E of the provincial road to Romagnano al Monte, there is a large
terrace of polygonal masonry of the 3d or 2d c. B.C.
which supported a small temple and its precinct. Near
Pareti, 0.8 km E on national highway no. 407, there are
remains of a podium of polygonal masonry datable to
the 2d c. B.C. At Ponte San Cono near the juncture of
national highways 407 and 19, there are remains of the
Roman bridge over the Platano.
