κρείσσον᾽ ἀγχόνης not “worse than hanging ” （such that, rather than do them, he would have hanged himself）: but “too bad for hanging ” （such that suicide by hanging would not adequately punish their author）. Eur. Hipp. 1217 “εἰσορῶσι δὲ ι θέαμα κρεῖσσον δεργμάτων ἐφαίνετο,” too dreadful to be looked on: Aesch. Ag. 1376 “ὔψος κρεῖσσον ἐκπηδήματος,” too high to be leaped over. ἀγχόνης: cp. Eur. Alc. 229: Aristoph. Ach. 125 “ταῦτα δῆτ᾽ οὐκ ἀγχόνη;” “is not this enough to make one hang oneself? ”
