ὡς without “ἄν”, as 760, O. T. 359, and oft. ἀνταμύνωνται, a neutral word: thus Thuc. 2.67 “τοῖς αὐτοῖς ἀμύνεσθαι”, to retaliate; but 1. 42 “τοῖς ὁμοίοις ἡμᾶς ἀμύνεσθαι”, to reward: here κακοῖς defines it.—“ἐξ ἴσου πατρί ῀ ὥσπερ ὁ πατήρ” (cp. 516): O. C. 171 “ἀστοῖς ἴσα χρὴ μελετᾶν”.—The son's part is “τοὺς αὐτοὺς ἐχθροὺς καὶ φίλους νομίζειν”,—the definition of a “ξυμμαχία” as dist. from a merely defensive “ἐπιμαχία”, Thuc. 1.44. Cp. 523 n.: Pind. P. 2. 83“φίλον εἴη φιλεῖν: ι ποτὶ δ᾽ ἐχθρὸν ἅτ᾽ ἐχθρὸς ἐὼν λύκοιο δίκαν ὑποθεύσομαι”.
