ἐλπίσαντεςἄγειν, not “ἄξειν”, because the sense is, ‘having formed the expectation that we were bringing him (to be) an ally,’ etc.; not, ‘that we should bring him.’ So 799 “ἐλπίζει φέρειν”, ‘forebodes that it tends.’ Ajax, as Teucer points out at v. 1097, was not ‘brought’ at all, but came of his free will.
