ἄταν οὐρανίαν φλέγων, ‘kindling a flame of ruin high as heaven,’ Whitelaw. Cp. Suppl. 808 “ἴϋζε δ᾽ ὀμφὰν οὐρανίαν”=“οὐρανομήκη”: and see n. on Ant. 418.This is more forcible here than, ‘inflaming the heaven-sent plague’ (=“θείαν”: cp. 186).
