μαθοῦς᾿, literally, ‘having perceived’ hismood.

ἐσσύθη=“ἐσύθη”, an epic license allowed in narrative. Cp. Theog. 183 “ἀπέσσυθεν” (3rd pl.). “συθείς” occurs in O. C. 119, and “συθῶμενib. 1724: “ἐσύθη” in Helen. 1302 (lyr.).
