ἄφιλα παρ᾽ ἀφίλοις: for the doubled adj., cp. 267 n. “παρά” with dat. =‘in their estimation’: Tr. 589“δοκεῖς παρ᾽ ἡμῖν οὐ βεβουλεῦσθαι κακῶς”: Dem. or. 2 § 3 “θαυμαστότερος παρὰ πᾶσι νομίζεται.” ἄφιλα … ἔπεσε, have fallen, have turned out, so as to win no kindness. The adj. is proleptic: “ἔπεσε” is a metaphor from dice: cp. Pind. O. 12. 10“πολλὰ δ᾽ ἀνθρώποις παρὰ γνώμαν ἔπεσεν. ” ἔπεσ᾽ ἔπεσε: for the iteration, cp. 1205: fr. 686 “βαρὺς βαρὺς ξύνοικος, ὦ ξένοι, βαρύς”. Elsewhere Sophocles usu. iterates a word only after a slight break, as in Ph. 1462“λείπομεν ὑμᾶς, λείπομεν ἤδη” (cp. El. 211).
