ἀρχαίης: i.e. the sun's ‘usual course’, direct east and west. To H. the earth is a flat surface, over which the sun moves in an arc (cf. iii. 104 n. and App. XIII. 3). χειμώνων. The theory that the sun's course was affected by storms was adopted by Democritus, who applied it also to the moon and stars. Cp. Lucr., R.
