[169] The lines seem to be practically a request by the poet to be awarded the prize; for the “μουσικῆς ἀγών” see p. lix. In J. H. S. xvii. p. 245 (after Ilgen) it was pointed out that this passage must be taken in connexion with Hes. fr. 227ἐν Δήλῳ τότε πρῶτον ἐγὼ καὶ Ὅμηρος ἀοιδοὶ

μέλπομεν, ἐν νεαροῖς ὕμνοις ῥάψαντες ἀοιδήν”,
Φοῖβον Ἀπόλλωνα χρυσάορον, ὃν τέκε Λητώ”.
The coincidence of subject and place is remarkable.
