Χιλίους ὁπλίτας—10 for each ship, as usual. These marines were generally Thetes. Cf. VI. 43 They were called ἐπιβάται. Καρκίνος—related to the famous tragic poet of the same name, at whom Aristophanes jests several times. Πρωτέας—had been one of the commanders of the 10 ships sent to Coreyra in 433. Intr. p. lxvii.
