καὶ αὐτοῖς.—the incident as related inevitably reminds us of a Greek tragedy—e.g. the Persae. τῶν νεκρῶν οὓς ἀπέκτειναν—cf. II. 52 νεκροὶ ἑπ᾽ ἀλλήλοις ἀποθνῄσκοντες. ξυνεξῇσαν—‘tried to depart with them.’
