εἴρητο . . . ἀφικομένῳ . . . παρακαλεῖν—same construction c. 20.1. The other constr.—the partic. in the aecus.—is found also in c. 20. Cf. VIII. 39 εἴρητο αὐτοῖς ἐς Μίλητον ἀφικομένους ξυνεπιμελεῖσθαι.

τὸ ξυμμαχικὸν—Argos was neutral throughout the Archidamian War, having a treaty with Sparta. It finally joined Athens in 417.

παρακαλεῖν . . . ἐπὶ—a military phrase; cf. παραβοηθεῖν ἐπὶ c. 37.3; 53.1: 71, 6.
