ἐπέπλει, ‘sailed on.’ For another meaning see c. 39, § 1. πρὶν ἔκπυστος γενέσθαι rather represents ‘priusquam hostes cognoscerent’ than ‘priusquam cognoverunt.’ τὰ ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ ξυννέφελα ὄντα ‘the foggy state of the atmosphere.’
ἀπεκλῄοντο, ‘they found themselves being surrounded (and cut off).’ This defeat of Charminus forms matter for a jest in Arist. Thesm. 803 (B.C. 411-410), Ναυσιμάχης μέν γ᾽ ἥττων ἐστὶν Χαρμῖνος: δῆλα δὲ τἄργα.
Ἁλικαρνασσόν, the chief city of Caria. It was evidently now friendly to Athens.
