In the comitia centuriata, it was determined by lot which century should first cast its vote. The vote of this century, called praerogativa (praerogo), was superstitiously regarded as an omen or earnest of the result which it was likely to decide. Hence the word is here used of the effective support given to Metellus at the polls by Verres. The praerogativa which Q. Metellus gave to Verres, in return for the praerogativae of the comitia, is described in the next section.
